Cal is California. Kite is the one from Kabul.

A kite goes up so everyone can see it. That is the idea the name carries, and it is still the job: take what a business does well and build it something worth looking at.

The name

Two words, two places.

  • Cal

    California.

    The studio is in San Francisco, with Silicon Valley down the road. That is where the work ships from and where most of our clients are.

  • Kite

    The kite of Afghan culture.

    The kite you fly on a rooftop, not the shape in a geometry book. It is a serious thing where the founder grew up. You build it by hand, you send it up, and everyone in the neighborhood can see it.

The story

Kabul Kite, then Calkite.

  1. Calkite started as Kabul Kite.

  2. The name moved to the US with its founder and became Calkite: the kite, in California.

  3. The work moved too. It began in marketing, where the job was getting a business seen. Fifteen years of that teaches you something useful: most businesses are not losing on attention. They are losing on the systems underneath, the ones nobody outside the company ever sees.

  4. So that is what we build now. The software a business runs on, built once, owned by the business.

Creative Director

Fifteen years in marketing. Five of them in real estate marketing. Now building the systems businesses run on.

The marketing years are why Calkite starts every build with the business rather than the stack. You do not get far designing a brokerage's listing platform if you have never had to sell a listing.

The real estate years are why commercial real estate is the industry we go deepest in. We know what a broker does all day, which is most of the reason the software we build for them fits.
